In its May, 2017 issue, The Chronicle of Higher Education quoted Mr. Falwell as follows:  “Given the chance, Mr. Falwell said, he would not change anything about his role as a surrogate for President Trump, whom he describes as a “dream president” for evangelicals. If anything, the campaign has been a windfall for Liberty, Mr. Falwell said.

“There’s millions in contributions that we’ve received only because I supported Trump publicly — multimillions just in the last six or eight months,” he said.

There’s millions in contributions that we’ve received only because I supported Trump publicly — multimillions just in the last six or eight months

Thus, by his own admission, in return for corralling tens of millions of white evangelicals into supporting Donald Trump for the presidency, Mr. Falwell raked in multimillions.  As egregious as that lucrative sell-out of Christ and his great commandment to “love our neighbors as ourselves” was, it is the very real policies that Mr. Falwell thereby unleashed on our nation that rank him among this country’s primary progenitors of New Jim Crow Theology.  This racist and covetous idolatry gave approval to 82 percent of America’s conservative white evangelicals to deny that the public policies subsequently established by their votes single-handedly exacerbated white supremacy (structural racism), poverty, hunger and the vilification and mistreatment of refugees and immigrants, and championed a healthcare bill that would take health care from the poor, the sick, the elderly, and the disabled to pay for tax cuts for the richest people in our country.  Sadly, it handed conservative white evangelicals a carte blanche, worldly mechanism by which they could, without feeling any betrayal of Christ or people, deny the Gospel’s inherent commands to champion racial, economic and social justice, as found in Isaiah 1:17, Isaiah 10:1-4, Proverbs 31:8-9, Amos 5:24, Luke 3:10-18, and ubiquitously throughout scripture.
